In the longitudinally spotted forms the dorsal brown band is reduced to a chain ofspots running backwards from each parietal along the body to the tail, and separatedfrom each other about the middle of the body by five longitudinal lines of paler-colouredscales, each spot having an interval of a scale before and behind it; the lateral dark linebecomes pale, finely and irregularly spotted with black. A dark brown spot on the sideof each ventral and continued on to the tail; two parallel lines of larger and more irregularspots internal to it, separated from each other on the anterior part of the body by ayellowish interspace, darker than the rest of the ventrals and becoming spotted as it istraced backwards, where it becomes faint. In others, the spots of the dorsal linesbecome nearly obsolete ; also every alternate scale along the mesial line of the backbecomes paler than the surrounding scales, so that a vertebral chain of paler scales ispresent. In such forms the black innermost spots on the ventrals become finelongitudinal lines enclosing a broad dusky ashy space, prolonged to near the extremityof the tail, finely punctulated with minute blackish spots. The head-markings remainintact. In others the general colour may be pale greyish olive above without black spotsfeebly indicated, but with a tendency to form a pale dorsal streak here and there.In these forms the head-markings are practically obsolete, but a short narrow darkband is present behind the eye. They live in Bulgaria. They are venomous but they have rear fangs. They must to chew several minutes to inject you venom. But they not deadly. Venom cause mild swelling and pain and nothing else.
