These days many Pacific Giants remain in the water in a neotonic (un-metamorphosed) state their whole lives. On my Oregon trip, I was determined to find a terrestrial adult, and thanks to the combined efforts of a couple of obsessed friends, we located 2 in the day we searched the forest together. A Buckley's (or Bromeliad) Tree Frog tries to find a place to hide in the Sacha Lodge, amazonian Ecuador. Found mainly in the western Amazon, where it is known as Rana de Casco Buckley.
There were lots of Amboli bush frogs in the area we stayed in Agumbe. We were surrounded by loud calls.. But spotting them is a different story..We found 3 pairs of Amboli bush frogs in amplexus. All of them were found on the ground. The calling males were perched on leaves. 1 male was slowly approaching this pair in amplexus.I found 1 male just observing another pair in amplexus from 3 inches away. He never made a move. Their agreement seemed to work ;-DThe female would occasionally move with the male on its back. But nothing much happened that night.
