Description:

The bontebok is an interesting story. Extinct in the wild, but not endangered. Hunted almost to extinction, down to about 20 animals in the 1930s, the surviving bontebok were translocated and benignly introduced to parks, reserves, and private farms across the Western Cape and elsewhere in Southern Africa. Like tigers, there are now more bonteboks living outside their native range than inside. The population of >3000 is considered secure and stable. With calves.
