Description:
"Migratory Grasshopper (Melanoplus sanguinipes) â male -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Note: With thanks to Brandon Woo, Contributing Editor, BugGuide, for the ID of this grasshopper. The BugGuide ID may be accessed here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/1234747 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 3 June 2016 Greenbelt Corridor Ray Roberts/Lewisville Lake FM 428 Access Area, Aubrey Branch Denton County, Texas This male Migratory Grasshopper was one of hundreds we observed flying at the time of our visit to the site. Together with Seaside Grasshopper, a larger hopper that flies in Texas from March to November, the two comprised the most abundant species of grasshoppers on this day. Migratory Grasshopper is a short grasshopper that measured not more than an inch from front to end. Migratory Grasshopper flies throughout all of North America per BugGuideâs brief description. There are 239 known North American species of Melanoplus (genus). Based on BugGuide observations of this species, Migratory Grasshopper flies from June to July in Texas. Because of its extensive flight in North America, Migratory Grasshopper is an authentic resident of the Western Hemisphere. The Greenbelt Corridor FM 428 Access Area is administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. BugGuide provided the following classification for Migratory Grasshopper.
