I'm not a huge fan of handling butterflies in this fashion, but it is the only way to see the upper side of the wings when they are still alive. And yes, I caught them with my hands. Net would have helped though. This one is a male, and the same individual shown at this observation http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/1874051. The two genders are easily separable but only from the upper pattern.
