A Pileated Woodpecker swoops upward a short distance and lands on a surface that faces the direction of approach. Video footage that was obtained during an encounter with a pair of birds that were identified in the field as Ivory-billed Woodpeckers shows upward swooping landings with long vertical ascents that allow time for maneuvering.
