Sierra Nevada red fox 2 (5262284708)

Image of Black Fox

Description:

Summary[edit] Description: In a photo taken September 13, 2010 at around 4 a.m., a Sierra Nevada red fox looks up at bait-filled sock attached to a tree, triggering an remote infrared camera to take its picture. Branches surround the fox and a band containing small wire gun-cleaning brushes encircles the tree below the bait sock. These brushes are placed specifically to extract a small sample of fur for DNA analysis. This gives us a backup in case we are unable to get a saliva sample from the bait bag. Saliva samples degrade after a week whereas DNA from fur samples remain viable for centuries. More information can be found at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/news/2010/snrf.shtml. Date: 13 September 2010, 03:53.
