Summary[edit] Description: Green needlegrass, with its diagnostic hairy collar and broad green lax basal leaves that tend to sun themselves, is most common at lower elevations in prairie and steppe vegeation in Montana. In forested or parkland settings, green needlegrass can occur sporadically but mainly in disturbed settings, such as road sides and the high dry edges of stream banks. In adjacent native parkland and montane meadows, the morphologically very similar Stipa (Achnatherum) nelsonii, Columbia needlegrass, is common.
