Description:
Poor Man's Beefsteak This fungus, called Poor Man's Beefsteak (Fistulina hepatica), is growing on a Silver Birch (Betula pendula) in the woods on Brereton Heath Country Park. It is an edible fungus but, as with all fungi, you need to be absolutely sure of its identification before cooking and eating it. The name derives from the texture which is like meat, and when it is cut open it exudes a red juice that looks like blood.
