Summary[edit] Description: English: This lizards inhabits the dry arid areas of Southern Australia. Its body is adapted well for harsh conditions with its armour-like scaly skin deterring predators and protection against the hostile climate. It is brownish in colour, but varying from dark to light brown to cream and yellow patterning. It has a fat stumpy tail similar to its head which not only is a defence against predators but a fat storing unit for famine allowing for three months of famine or winter hibernation. A distinctive feature is its blue tongue. An adult can grow up 41 cms in length. Generally herbivorous the Shingleback will eat insects and scorpions. Uncommonly the shingleback is monogamous and will mate with a suitable partner for twenty years or more producing between one to four live offspring from beginning of summer to late autumn. Daytime finds the lizard active and when resting takes refuge under tree trunks, leaf litter and grasses. Date: 12 September 2013, 20:04:50.
