Carabus coriaceus is a species of beetle widespread in Europe, Belarus, Russia and Siria. In Europe it is primarily found in deciduous forests and mixed forests. The flightless, nocturnal animals hunt insects, snails, worms and carrion on the forest floor, sometimes they also get fruit. During the day the beetles hide under moss or stones, only very rarely can they be observed during the day. In case of danger, they emit a smelly fluid from the glands on the posterior wall. The leather beetle has strong mandibles. Leather beetles are protected by nature in Germany, included to the Red Book of the Smolensk region of Russia - Category III - a rare species. Жужелица шагреневая, или жужелица чёрная распространена в Европе, Беларуси, России и Сирии. В основном, обитает в лиственных смешанных лесах. Нелетающее ночное насекомое, охотится на наземных насекомых, улиток, червей, также питается падалью и иногда фруктами. Обладает мощными челюстями. В случае опасности выпускает из желез на брюшной полости зловонную жидкость В течение дня жук прячется под мох или камни, очень редко может наблюдаться днем. Занесен в Красную книгу Смоленской области с категорией III — редкий вид, в Германии находится под охраной.
