Daily fish distribution in Lago Gutiérrez - pone.0044350.s010

Description:

Daily fish distribution in Lake Gutiérrez. A time-lapse animation of all (13) transects surveyed during a 24-hour period (day 2) showing the daily spatiotemporal distribution and habitat selection game of hide and seek in Lake Gutiérrez. Low and high abundances (i.e., ln(N+1)) are found during day and night, respectively, with dense aggregations near shore (>400 m) at 30-50 m depth and lesser aggregations below 70 m along the bottom. In addition, two periods of rapid increase and decrease occur at dusk and dawn, respectively. Based on previous gill-net studies, the upper distribution layer is consistent with the habitat preferences of the main zooplanktivore, Galaxias maculatus, while the deeper distribution layer likely originates from the larger, benthic species, Galaxias platei. Single targets, observed even offshore during day, are likely caused by large, introduced predators, rainbow-, brown- and brook trout with decreasing depth preference, respectively. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0044350.g002
