Description:
Summary[edit] Description: Yellow Swarming Fly (Thaumatomyia notata), a male with everted vesicles hanging out on the ivy in the back yard a few days ago with at least 4 others of his species. I think the vesicles are formed from spongy layers of cells and have some function related to attracting a mate, maybe by releasing pheremones. ID confirmed by John and Barbara Ismay, see www.dipteristsforum.org.uk/t3705-Thaumatomyia-notata-%28m.. Details of the observation: Thaumatomyia cf. notata (male) Ipswich, East Suffolk TM16644502 29-Mar-2014 with at least 4 others on Ivy in back garden. Date: 29 March 2014, 15:10.
