Helvella solitaria P. Karst 600889

Image of Pezizomycetes

Description:

Summary[edit] Description: Helvella solitaria P. Karst. Image location: McClellan Ranch Preserve, Cupertino, Santa Clara Co, California, USA Growing by a trail, under oaks. Stalks (almost) entirely under ground surface. Spores 17 × 11.5-12, perhaps immature (there were only a few free floating). A week ago I found a bunch of Hellvela in the same place (2 m away) that were much smaller and darker and that I thought were H. leucomelaena; picture included. (I have that collection, but haven’t examined it.) Now I’m looking at the differences between H. leucomalaena and H. solitaria and it seems that the presence of absence of croziers (forked acus base) is a differentiator. And I think I’m seeing them now. Recognized by sight : For more information about this, see the observation page at Mushroom Observer.
