The skin presents a mosaic-like appear-ance, and its colour is of a paler grey than in most other races. This race was named on the evidence of a young specimen in the Berlin Zoological Gardens, the head of which is here shown (fig. 2). The Congo elephant (ii. ix. cottoni) apparently comes very close to this type, but has the ear less regu-larly oval. Its tusks are very long and slender. The Masai race (E. a. knodienJiaueri), typically from German East Africa, is a very large elephant, with small, regularly triangularears, with the lappet angu-lated and pointed. A mounted specimen in theBritish Museum (fig. 3) fromnear Fort Manning, north-east Rhodesia, standing i ifeet 4 inches in height, withears measuring 4 feet 2inches by 3 feet 5 inches,either belongs to this raceor indicates a closely alliedtype.
