When isolated it develops anarrow oblong liead of many small branches,but with age a fulkT, rounder and usuallyirregular picturescjue head. The bark ofbranches is smooth at first, of a lustrous red-dish brown color, but with age breaks andseparates into successive layers which curl upand long persist as tliin papery scales ofvarious tints of red and i)rt)wii.
