Image of desert willow

Description:

Chilopsis linearis ssp. arcuata—desert willow. While Chilopsis linearis ssp. linearis is found in the deserts of northern Mexico and southwestern United States, ssp. arcuata is restricted to California, Nevada, and Baja California. The species willow-like flexibility led to many Native American uses including basket-weaving and construction of storage sheds (Buckminister Fuller was not the first person to make use of domes.) The striking purple to pink to whitish flowers make this a desirable plant for arid gardens. It is hardy to the low teens F. and easy to grow from seed or cuttings. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
