Er wird als Flächennaturdenkmal (FND0003WR) geschützt und liegt im FFH-Gebiet "Devonkalkgebiet bei Elbingerode und Rübeland" (FFH 0082LSA). Am Felsen gedeiht die Nickende Distel (Carduus nutans).
