Main barracks at Fort Tejon, California, 1914 (CHS-6265)

Image of oak

Description:

Main barracks at Fort Tejon, California, 1914 Photograph of the main Barracks No.1 at Fort Tejon, near Tejon Pass in the Tehachapi Mountains, southern Kern County, California − 1914. The adobe barracks longhouse shows minor signs of disrepair, although to a lesser degree than the chickenwire fence in front with its gate open. Only the abandoned barracks' windows and the adobe brick exterior are evidently unkempt. A large Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) tree obscures some of the barracks at the center of the frame, while still more branches dangle in from the left across the trunk of a second old and large Valley oak tree. oak woodlands and chaparral heavily cover most of the hill in background. The smaller adobe and craftsman-style Soldiers Quarters building is visible in the far background at right, also unkempt.
