Image of Cheilosia vernalis (Fallen 1817)

Description:

Summary[edit] Description: NT77 records Cove, Berwickshire, Scotland. NT7871 Small female Cheilosia without projecting facial hairs, dark front tarsi (not shown), hairy eyes, legs partly pale, hind tibia mostly dark & scutellum with marginal bristles, sternites glossy, dark antennae & hind tibiae half dark or more = 'carbonaria' group. Abdomen not pear-shaped discounting carbonaria. This leaves cynocephala, vernalis and semifasciata. Semifasciata can be discounted because of its narrow abdomen, low knob on facial profile, range & absence of foodplant at site (top of coastal cliff). Scarce cynocephala has dark smudges on the wings (see discussion: www.flickr.com/photos/63075200@N07/sets/72157629749169519/ ) but the commoner vernalis can be variable. On balance the above fly is most likely a female Cheilosia vernalis. Date: 25 July 2012, 14:18. Source: Cheilosia cf. vernalis (female). Author: S. Rae from Scotland, UK.
